Kgotla – a meeting place
An age-old tradition
Kumisso and his friend, Thabang, talk about the kgotla, a traditional meeting place for village assemblies, court cases and meetings of local chiefs.
Today, kgotla meetings are still held, where local issues are debated. The general goal is to attain consensus on whatever issue the assembly happens to be discussing.
The kgotla also acts as a court, where wrong-doers can be brought for justice. As Kumisso reveals, people who have committed crimes can be disciplined and punished here.
But the kgotla can also be a happy place. Marriages and announcements are sometimes celebrated here.
