The craft market
'Stuff for tourists' at the craft market
‘We sell African stuff to tourists,’ says one of the stall-holders in part of Soweto, South Africa, where tourists are delivered on tour buses.
Some of the goods on display are bought from suppliers or individuals in other parts of the continent. But most are made by the stall-holders themselves – many items are made from beads and wire, such as necklaces, earrings, keyrings. Some necklaces are made from recycled paper that’s glued and painted.
One of the stallholders brings out a table lamp, made almost entirely from bigger beads – the lamp base, the lamp shade, even the electric wiring is studded with beads.
Another trader offers his range of masks – they’re for celebration, he insists. Nothing sinister (although a few look a bit threatening).
