Sugar cane: a big business
An eye opener – working in a Ugandan factory
Here is the biggest sugar cane factory in the country, providing a steady income for hundreds of workers who may otherwise be unable to feed their families.
Felicity, Charles, John Paul and Damalie are here to look around and meet some of the workers.
Although the workers receive a steady income it is not very much and the working conditions, as the children discover, are not desirable.
Health and safety officers from the West would have a field day. But this is Uganda – smoke billows, hot water drips and cables litter walkways. The factory is noisy, hot, gloomy in places, and the sickly sweet smell is all-pervading.
Even so, the young lady showing the children around is a true professional. She knows her stuff, and she doesn’t flinch under the heat that makes you sweat.
