Drumming and Dancing

Dance, Dance wherever you may be…

All children love to dance, no matter where they are in the world.

Children in Lusaka, Zambia, are no different. They love to dance.

They have come together to perform some traditional Zambian dancing.

It all begins with…….

The sound of the drum

The drum is a traditional musical instrument used in Zambia. However, Western influence has meant that a number of other instruments are also used.

The drumming begins, the children gather and the cheeky smiles of boys and girls emerge.

Among a circle of children clapping and singing, a girl takes to the floor. She begins her rhythmic routine. She is smiling from ear to ear, caught up in the music and feeling.

Each girl has her turn to perform, as the little ones look on in admiration.

Here come the boys

It’s the boys turn and here they go… rhythmic, strong and bold, they stamp and clap in unison.

There is clearly a different emphasis put on the dancing by the girls and the boys. It varies from breathless acrobatic spectacles, to more subtle sounds and movement.
